In the Dash 03:13
In gated towns you find gated families guarding truths lies and secrets evenly In the dark of the night, their castout sons arise to claim their rightful piece of the family tree American dreams will fade in a haze of drink and the pills that keep you up at night don't help you think in the back of a car, a shotgun and the morning light turn the page on the days of youthful fights Do you remember, what happened on that night why these sinking feelings last five steps further from my final fate life is what happens in the dash I served my last last meal for the very last time today While the radio tells how the good and bad are weighed In the dark of the night, their castout sons arise to claim the space in the place we call the dash Do you remember, what happened on that night why these sinking feelings last five steps further from my final fate life is what happens in the dash

Pushing Tin 03:02
The whistle blows, the bell it rings, the whip is fast and firm They’re stacking up before me, each one waits its turn I’m losing control, but the birds are coming in in The weekend is over before it begins Early to bed and early to rise Somehow each morning comes as a surprise The last one up is the last one in again when you’re pulling up and I’m pushing tin Lights come up again, just like they have before I’m searching for my bearings in the cracks of a barroom floor I choke back my pride and the cold wind hits my face walk down the road to your place

If you had something to say, you could have said it to me and if you had to run away, you could have run to me Captain. I think of you everyday and night. I always thought you'd be by my side. Oh Sidewinder, Sidewinder, I heard it was you, I heard it was you, A bolt straight from the blue, headed right for me, What else could it be? Blindsided, Sidewinder, There's nothing left to do, Except give in to you, I tried. There's nothing left to do, Except give in to you.

Hypocrite 02:42
Like a sad sack living in the daily grind, I'm scratching for a living for what I find, Gotta keep it going gotta toe the line the joke's on me I always had time for one more round I’m driving around town with new friends i'd found but it's 3am, and it’s going down another joke's on me When I close my eyes, I hear them whispering… You’re telling lies, I know it’s so. You've got a death wish grip on a canine hair and a tired back story that i cannot bear through a midday buzz and a broken stare I can see you smile When I close my eyes, I hear them whispering… You’re telling lies, I know it’s so. I'm a neer do well, you're a hypocrite You're lying right now, I'm believing it you want a lift home, and i'm completely lit I guess the joke's on me I got a cross to bear you got a broken back you pack 10 pounds of lies in a five pound sack You’re knocking me down when I was back on track. Peace love and and understanding them is the things that you lack.

Everyday 03:24
It's hard to really see, but I’m trying to slap your face I'm blinded by light, come and lift me up from disgrace Stop staring off in space, and thinking about the cake Won't you wake up to the real truth, and not the grave you'll make Look around with some real eyes you and I are brothers soon you’ll realize Who are you? Who do you answer to? Won't you look me in the eyes - it's long past due Don't be afraid, Or worry about whom you’ve laid We're getting so much closer - everyday Let go of the daily, Let go of that old Corvette You got so much more than you know, You got more than money can ever get. You give meaning to this life, You give meaning to beyond You can bottle up that meaning to keep for when you're gone Deep inside you’ll find an innocence A deep forgiveness for all your sins Who are you? Who do you answer to? Won't you look me in the eyes - it's all past due Don't be afraid, Or worry about whom you’ve laid We're getting so much closer - everyday

Grabbing lots of cash selling no man's land, Steady Handed Stan had a grand old plan, Oh no! Always took his chances, in the places he'd landed, Never looked back at what he'd abandoned, Oh no! It all comes back to you, no matter what you do, But it always seems that there's another fool. Mama told him so, She said don't get too low, She said, “Don't do what i do, just do what I say and that's ‘never, never, never, never, never look back’" Slipping Jimmy Jones had it all worked out, Falling on his face as people looked and shouted, "Oh no!" Sidwalks, curbs and streets, they were all in line, All another way to make a crooked dime, Oh no! It all comes back to you, no matter what you do, But it always seems that there's another fool. Mama told him so, She said don't get too low, She said, “Don't do what i do, just do what I say and that's ‘never, never, never, never, never look back’"

When I slow down and think about it, I realize that there’s a chance I was so unfair. Swallowed by the deep big blue, Floats, empty hooks, and despair I was holed up in my glass citadel, Waiting for my troubles to pass on through. Marking time and staying low, wishing for all them to all go go go Back to the shadows Where we were born. It doesn't matter to me, If we were irresponsible, We could make it work, you see, And I could be your brother again. Let’s stop all the bluffing, It’s yielding next to nothing, Let’s let it go and take it from here.

Mystery 02:55
There's a ragged black cat and it's casting it's eyes around me. While a one legged rabbit and shoeless mare cries silently. Garlic scent, clovers, and ginger snaps they remind me Of that portrait of you, and the lock of your hair All tied up in a mystery. I'm trying to find our way out. The stars line up, and spell my fate tonight. Do they say I'm with you? Please, say I'm with you. Please, say I'm with you. The reflection of you, from our mirror in two, weighs hard on me, Scattered salt across the floor, haphazardly. But crickets, scarabs, turtles and dragonflies - they revive me and show me it could still come true, that you might still care All locked up in a mystery. I'm trying to find a way out. The stars line up, and spell my fate tonight. Do they say I'm with you? Please, say I'm with you. Please, say I'm with you.

This started as a story about a love to last for years Sharing tattoos, bar tabs and bad jokes Now it's shoulders wet with tears as we struggle to remember How it ended up here And how a sweet love can sours so quickly Into jealousy and fear It started as a story, it’s turned into a song It was more than she could bear. As I grew tired of making rhymes, telling lies Trying to fool myself that I was a man Now It's a string of strange apartments And names I'll never know What started as a story, is ending as a note An empty soul long past it’s age A heart like yours been beating down and broken only harbors bitterness and rage Now it’s time that I should leave you I wrote it on this page

I woke up alone to my coal black heart, Woke up alone to my coal black heart, To an empty bottle and my coal black heart. Another stillborn day another stillborn day another Empty bottle and my coal black heart. But it’s all mine, yeah, it’s all mine. You can do what you want but it’s all mine. I woke up alone.

She was a beauty she had a need for speed. had a glare that could buckle my knees A coupe de ville that I’d never seen run a Polka dot dress and her hair in a bun Lights up, head down Tried to put up a fight She flashed a grin put her foot on the dash and told me “Baby, your up tight tight tight tight” Digging deep tried to turn up the heat She knocked one back as she chewed off her leash turned the radio up, it was her favorite song Bee By Bickty-by… bo bo go Little bottles, white pills nothing seemed to help Just as I was worried she would never slow down i heard myself say, lets go, go, go If we do wrong right, We’ll make it out of here Pack your things, head for the door, let’s go Cause when you do right wrong, people get stuck round here Just leave your things, let's hit the road, and go She’s the only one that gets me She’s the only one that cares Think what you want, just keep it to yourself She’s by breakneck Betty, I’m her whiplash square Little bottles, white pills nothing seemed to help Just as I was worried she would never slow down with just five words turned it all around If we do wrong right, We’ll make it out of here Pack your things, head for the door, let’s go Cause when you do right wrong, people get stuck my friend, Just leave your things, let's hit the road, and go

This record marks the first studio appearance of both Dave Smolarek on guitar and Matt Schreier on drums. The band's primary song writers, Ron Thornton and Jim Dier, return with help from Matt and Dave as well as new producer, Kevin Blackwell. Lending lyrical help were Jamie Kane and Michael Stodola.

The record has a strong sound due to both the production direction from Kevin but also the expert mixing done by Chet Lyster (The Eels, The Jayhawks, Lucinda Williams.) Trevor Sadler of Mastermind Productions handled the vinyl and digital mastering.
